Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden Immediately

This is a fun science and a great product. We bought this in March from Amazon, and quickly received the caterpillar larvae from Insect Lore after submitting the coupon information and paying the shipping online. The caterpillars hatched about a week after the larvae arrived. A couple weeks after they hatched, they started making their chrysalides. A few weeks after that, they hatched into beautiful painted lady butterflies. The process occurred exactly as the directions and all those science classes you've had over the years said it would. Living it and watching the process in real life is much better than reading about it, both for my wife and I, and for our six year old daughter. We all loved having pet butterflies.

The whole process takes about two months, depending on how long you keep the butterflies in their cage before releasing them. The cage is a cheap Chinese made product that is adequate for the purpose but could probably be done better. We wished that we had a larger environment for the butterflies to fly around in. My wife vetoed my daughter's idea to let them fly around the house. I was in favor of the idea. All 5 of the larvae hatched into caterpillars, and in the long run resulted in 5 butterflies. On "release day" 3 of the 5 butterflies flew away strongly. The other 2 had issues. I think that was my fault and not indicative of an inferior product. (let's just say to be careful during feeding not to drop any large sections of orange onto any of your colorful friends)

A lot of reviews on Amazon complain about the pricing of this product, but I think that it is fairly priced and actually a good deal if you do it through Amazon. Insect Lore is not a fly by night Internet company that is doing this to make a quick buck. They have been developing and selling these sorts of experiences since the late 1960s. Their model of selling the kit, and having their customers mail in for the larva may not seem optimized for the internet age, but considering the "shelf life" issues, and the fact that they started as a mail order operation makes it understandable. They have optimized the process somewhat by allowing the coupon information to be submitted online.

When we decided to do the butterfly experience again, after doing the first batch, I was annoyed when I saw that it costs almost as much to buy replacement larvae from Insect Lore as it does to buy the whole kit from Amazon. That isn't really a complaint about the product that I'm reviewing on this page, but rather shows just how good of a deal it is. We were ready for a new cage anyway after having the butterflies live in it for so long.

I was really excited to order Moon in my Room for my space loving son. It has been a disappointment to say the least. First of all, it only works with it's remote, which is fine unless you want your child to be able to control it himself and not have to worry that the remote will be lost in the sea of toys that is a 5-year-old's room. And none of us were impressed with the "phases" feature. There isn't a lot of definition, so the light kind of spreads all over the moon, ruining the effect of each "phase." Also, I may be the only crazy one, but from reading the project description I thought that you could program the moon to actually phase through along with the actual moon (so when the moon is a crescent outside, the moon would be a crescent inside). Maybe that was just me not reading closely enough, but if anyone else is thinking that you can program it...you can not. It's just a night light with multiple settings.

Oh, and perhaps the biggest selling point against it is that ours stopped working after a month. (And yes, we've checked and replaced the batteries).

Manual: Is just a cheap white xerox copy looking print out folded and stapled. With NO pictures. Very few experiments and they are all pretty much the same experiments. All just ways to view the interaction of acids and basics.

Hardware supplies: 3 little plastic dixie cups. 3 plastic test tubes with rounded bottoms and no rack to hold them. They want you to put them in a cup to hold them for viewing. They could have at least made the bottoms flat or included a cheap rack to go with the cheap test tubes. 2 straws, a pippet, and 2 measuring spoons that do not have the measurement amounts printed on them, but instead are referred to as the medium and small spoon. No clay or anything to mold a basic volcano. Instead they include a recipe for using flour to make a really bad paste for the volcano.

Chemicals: pretty much everything you already have in your kitchen except for the Citric Acid, which you could buy somewhere else or use Vinegar which works better in many of the acid/basic experiments.

While I knew when I bought this that the supplies would likely be over priced for this kit. I was expecting that the cost was justified for what I was expecting the manual to be. The manual should have been a nice color experiment book with pictures. And should have been a good collection of experiments that were more than just make colors change and watch the bubbles. Worthless kit. Just google for some simple experiments yourself. You likely have everything in your kitchen already and you will likely find more exciting things to show and teach your kids. My son received this toy for Christmas when he was about 10 months old. The first time we turned it on for him, he was stricken with terror. I put the toy up on a shelf and every time he walked past it, he would get a nervous look on his face. However, when we would have older kids visit, it was the favorite toy, hands down. We have all the Toy Story sets, except the 'giant' Zurg and Buzz, which we can't find (except on e Bay at JACKED UP prices!). As of today, Amazon is not carrying them and Toys R Us is sold out. My 7 year old loves these sets. They are great Lego quality. I know some people buy Lego sets to collect, but these are Toys at our house and are played with heavily since Christmas. Lego getting the Toy Story license was a nice idea, good business for Lego, good fun for Toy Story fans. It's a win win situation! (ha just had to say it)

I have to agree with the other review, as a reminder, if you're tempted to buy this for a younger child, this probably isn't suitable for anyone younger than 5-6 at the lowest unless closely working with an adult. Younger children WILL want to play with them, and unless you're completely sure there is no chance of these pieces being swallowed, I would use age-wise caution when purchasing.
Of course, all good Moms and Dads know this anyway!
